What Is Glufosinate?

Glufosinate is a broad-spectrum herbicide used to control weeds in various crops. It works by inhibiting an enzyme involved in plant amino acid synthesis, ultimately leading to the death of susceptible plants. Glufosinate is also a topic of debate due to its concerns on the potential impact of human health as well as the environment. Some studies suggest possible health risks and there are environmental concerns regarding its persistent and potential harm to non-target organisms.

Glufosinate is one of the herbicides that can be used on golf courses to control weeds. Lawsuits and controversies are being filed against manufacturers just like lawsuits have been filed against Roundup. More recently there is a golf pro who says exposure to Roundup caused his cancer. Gary Lindeblad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1999 after spending years on the golf course, Indian Canyon Golf Course.

There is no safe amount of poison that can be sprayed on anything we are consuming let alone spraying these dangerous herbicides in parks, schools, playgrounds, HOA's or even our own personal landscaping. Everyone wants green grass but pulling weeds is far safer than spraying chemicals and there are good alternative non-toxic weed killers. Poison is poison and often referred to as chemical rape with clients that have been harmed by them. We must continue to push back with our communities who receive any of these so called "free" products from the state. Spraying dangerous chemicals are harmful to our families and there are no exceptions! We must educate them on safe non-toxic alternatives for the health of our communites. For more information on these alternatives, please feel free to send me an email at lgagan@lucky2beme.org. Please also visit nontoxiccommunities.com for more information on how these communites change the way they tackle weeds.
